Summary
Concerning scholarship possibilities for Knight's son; sending him the most recent copy of the University Gazette, "...in which from page 273 onward you will find full information as to scholarships at the Oxford Colleges. The Lent Term is generally the best term for boys to compete for schol'ps & I should recommend your son to try for them this time next year. He need not come into residence (if he is successful) until Oct : 1887. As to the best Colleges, I think that Balliol, New College, Corpus Christi, & Magdalen represent in popular estimation the pick of scholastic prizes : then perhaps Trinity. - I am conscious of not having fulfilled a promise to you - I hope to do so before long. I wrote yesterday to Principal Tulloch to ask for leave to dedicate a new book of mine on Moral Phil. to the University of St. Andrews - my 2nd mother."
