Summary
Writing in support of Knight's application for a vacant position; saying "I hardly know how properly to express myself as to your fitness for this vacant chair - I have known you long & well; few men know more about English Literature, few men can express better what they know & feel - Wordsworth & his poetical & literary friends have received great additional interest & even in a personal sense a new life from your work in connection with them. I do not presume to compare you with the rival candidates but I will say that they must be remarkable men indeed if they are fitter than you for the chair you are desirous of [illegible] - or even as fit. I have not the honour of knowing Lord Lothian except by sight, nor do I suppose my opinion will have any weight with him; but this is my opinion & if you think it will do any good to you to use this letter you are very welcome to use it." .
