Summary
Saying he sent him his contribution to the memorial on Principal Shairp but would like to make "...a few small corrections & additions which I will make in the proof;" saying he was "...grieved & distressed by your letter" and encouraging him "...not to strain your mind as it is clear to me that you are doing - why should we, any of us, shorten the short time which is allowed us here - As far as this world is concerned - the night cometh when no man can work - why should we hasten its too swift advent? When you come again to see us (& I hope that will not be very long [illegible] - & that you will not come alone) we will not allow you to work quite so hard as you did at Heath's Court. What however has Murray to interfere? It is this sort of thing which makes one sympathize with James Spedding's lifelong warfare against the cormorants on the tree of knowledge. Once more I do pray you not to shorten a life which will be too short for friendship however long it is."
