Summary
Concerning the memorial for John Campbell Shairp; saying "I had not heard what you tell me & what I rejoice to hear - that you are to do the memorial of J.C.S. - It could not be in better hands - I will try what I can do with very great pleasure; for I knew him from 1839 with ever increasing intimacy & deepening attachment. But when I say that I 'will try' you know too well that I am not to be depended on - I wish very much indeed I could come to S. Andrews - It has always been a dream of mine to see it & I could not see it under better auspices than yours though we have a common sorrow in thinking of 'what might have been';" adding that he has to be in Glasgow and Birmingham for dinners and so it is unlikely he will get to St. Andrews.
