Summary
Congratulating him upon his appointment as professor of moral philosophy and welcoming him to Saint Andrews; writing "I trust that we shall be able by continual efforts to reanimate St. Andrews by drawing it nearer to Dundee"; expressing concern about Knight's plans to continue serving as a minister while taking up his new job: "Of course circumstances differ vastly, but I well remember the comfort I felt in entering on my work here, at having finally said farewell to my parish. I do not think I could have begun with so much spirit, -- and the first step in these things goes far, -- if I had had any lingering responsibilities dragging me from behind"; recommending that he find someone to take over his pastoral position; mentioning, on behalf of his wife, that there is a house in Abbotsford Crescent available; concluding "We must soon have another talk about Dundee."
