Written on mourning stationery from "10 Foulis Terrace / S.W."
The letter is simply dated "Sunday night" but it is possible the year is 1866. He refers to leaving for Ireland and gives the address at Danesfort. Butcher writes to Knight on July 23, 1886 from Danesfort (MA 9165.2) following up on a letter from London written on July 7, 1886 (MA 9165.1). In the letter from Ireland Butcher again refers to the lecture Knight has asked him to deliver and agrees to giving it in December. He also refers to Home Rule and the first Home Rule Bill was in 1866.
Provenance
Purchased by Pierpont Morgan from William Angus Knight, 1908.
Summary
Concerning a lecture that Knight has invited him to give and asking for more time to make a decision...Home Rule has thrown me into arrears. What is the date (approximately) when you w'd require my services? We leave for Ireland tomorrow...I did not get home the other day from my electioneering campaign till the afternoon. I was aiding in turning out Arch!"
