Summary
Celebration his career upon his retirement; saying "Your retirement from the Chair calls up to the minds of your friends the great services you have rendered to Scotland & to the larger cause of education outside St. Andrews. No one has worked with a higher ideal or given himself, mind & spirit, more wholeheartedly to the work of a teacher. Your activities have been so wide that you have friends as well as pupils everywhere, & though you intend, I believe, to leave Scotland, you will not easily get outside the circle of those who are bound to you by many ties of friendship & gratitude. So long as your bodily health remains (and as, I trust, continues to improve) your vigour & keenness will be unabated. You may wear out but you cannot rust out, & life, I hope, has still many high enjoyments in store for you."
