Summary
Thanking him for his condolences on the death of his wife; saying "I see the desolation of my life very clearly & calmly. She was my whole world. But the memory of the 26 years of perfect companionship with her is itself a thing to uplift a shattered life. I will do my best - God knows it may be a poor attempt - not to be unworthy of her. The "Scotsman" notice touched me deeply. I was glancing half mechanically along the columns when it caught my eye. You speak of "In Memoriam" - It so happens that I have been lately re-reading it with much thought in the light of Bradley's Commentary. My mind is full of it. We may meet perhaps in London in the latter half of May. As yet I can plan nothing; I can barely do the duties of the hour."
