Summary
Commenting on the "tumult" of the York election, "...a stiff fight it was. But I have never been present at a scene of such enthusiasm;" commenting on the position of English Chair saying "No chance of A. Lang for English Chair. My impression is that Saintsbury will get it, owing to the strong interest he has with certain members of the Gov't. I have only met him once. In spite of his great learning I have doubts (like you) whether he is the man for the place. Churton Collins also in the field. All accounts agree in his being an admirable lecturer. There is not such clear testimony as to his being a helpful colleague. Curiously enough, I have never met him. I have written urging the claims of Raleigh, if he or any of the younger men may be regarded as in the running. The Electors are going splendidly! & such tragic catastrophes!
