Summary
Concerning an opening at the University of Glasgow for a Professor of English Literature for which Knight would like to be considered; explaining that he is "...rather committed to Andrew Bradley (now at Liverpool, in case he stands. On going through the possible candidates in my mind, I could think of no one so good as him & I told him so. But I must own you had not occurred to me, as I associated you with another department. Yet I see at once the great claim that your published works w'd give you (to say nothing of your general qualifications) as an English Literature chair. If Glasgow gets you they will indeed be lucky. I don't imagine that Testimonials, strictly so called, are ever sent in for a Crown Appointment. But the influence of friends doubtless counts. In this case I don't flatter myself that my influence w'd be any thing. I do not know Lord Lothian except in a semi-official way, & not sufficiently to write where one's advice was unasked. If the opportunity presents itself I shall feel bound to speak strongly of your distinction & your claims, though I don't see how I can take active steps. I have told you frankly how I am situated & I don't think you will misunderstand me."
