Summary
Agreeing to "undertake the December instead of a later month;" discussing hay harvesting saying "At this moment my mind is occupied by the attempt to solve the question How to make hay in spite of weather & of Land League. Both these forces are doing their best to prevent me from cutting & saving the hay in a few meadows round the house. I think I have beaten the League but I am not so sure about the heavens;" discussing the defeat of the Home Rule Bill and saying it "...produced a strangely sobering effect on the mass of the people here. The police & every one notices it. They have become extraordinarily civil. Probably they are watching with some anxiety to see what a new Government will do. Many of our friends have uneasy consciences & wish to stand well just at present in the eyes of magistrates, police & the party of order;" returning to the lecture he has agreed to deliver and asking what is the latest date he can let him know the subject he has chosen; adding that he and Mrs. Butcher are looking forward to spending a few days at St. Andrews with him and Mrs. Knight.
