Summary
Telling Knight that he has had a health scare and will not be able to come to St. Andrews after all: "the old pain & trouble began in my leg -- & I was for many days uncertain whether it wd. not develop into a long & steady attack of the disease I suffer from. I believe I have escaped this time -- I feel as if it has been beaten off & I hope to resume work next Sunday. But I dare not take a long journey in the cold, except at great risk, & the risk is one I cannot face. If this thing came on suddenly at St. Andrews, I should be laid up there, unable to move for three or four months"; apologizing for cancelling his visit; writing that he looks forward "with great interest" to Knight's Life of William Wordsworth.
