Summary
Confirming the dates for his visit to St. Andrews; writing that "I feel, since you have elected [Arthur James] Balfour for yr. Rector, as if I were going into a foreign land, where 'tyrants roam among their flatterers.' But I have consoled myself by reading, flying, his address this morning in the Times. I still believe sufficiently in the intelligence of the students of St. Andrews to believe also that they will go home grunting 'This will not do'"; extending this critique to other Scottish universities: "Perhaps this may be the 'dreadful example' which will finally convince Edinburgh, Glasgow & the rest of you that politicks should be kept out of the election of Rectors."
