Thanking him for reviews of "The Spire,"(1952), "Between Wind and Water," (1966) and other books; criticizing the notice in "The Saturday Review" of Wagenknecht's "Cavalcade of the American Novel,"(1952); saying he is working on a book tentatively entitled "The Stuff of Fiction" [published 1966] and on an autobiography [presumably "Days That Were," 1976]; expressing his frustration (in 1969) in teaching writing to the current generation of college students; praising at length Wagenknecht's "Ralph Waldo Emerson; portrait of a balanced soul," (1974) and thanking him for the dedication; commenting on Wagenknecht's two pseudonymous novels; saying he is reading Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," with some misgivings; repeatedly praising Wagenknecht's creative energy, saying "I really know of no one, past or present, who has done such heroic work in scholarship and history--and in fiction!"; and praising Wagenknecht's "A pictorial history of New England,"(1976) and his "Nathaniel Hawthorne: man and writer," (1961). Boardman, Jr., of Oxford University Press, praising Wagenknecht's "Harriet Beecher Stowe: the known and unknown," (1965); with a two-page autograph evaluation of Wagenknecht's novel "Nine before Fothering hay: a novel about Mary Queen of Scots" (published under the pseudonym Julian Forrest, 1966); with letters dated 6 August 1978 from Brace's wife Huldah, and 10 August 1978 from his daughter Barbara Brace Seeley, thanking Wagenknecht for condolences upon Brace's death; and with a letter from Ms. Seeley dated 5 October 1986 notifying Wagenknecht of the death of her mother, Huldah Brace.
