Notes
Damas uses the French Republican calendar. However, the date of writing is faint and hard to read. The date was previously interpreted as 1797 June 22, but François Houdecek of the Fondation Napoléon argues for a possible dating of 22 June 1799 or 23 June 1800, based on the contents of the letter.
This letter was previously attributed to Thomas Alexandre Dumas. In March 2020, François Houdecek (editor of the Correspondance Générale de Napoléon) identified the writer as François-Étienne de Damas and the recipient as Jean Joseph Marcel. Houdecek also noted that the letter is written in two different hands.
Address panel: "au citoyen Marcel / directeur de l'imprimerie / nationale / au Kaire / le chef de l'etat major général de l'armée."
