Previously attributed to Carlos de Borbón, Infante of Spain (1788-1855). Based on the contents of the letter and the handwriting, scholar Karen Racine identified the writer as José Miguel de Carvajal y Manrique de Lara (March 2020).
Removed from an extra-illustrated copy of Alexis Brialmont, History of the life of Arthur, duke of Wellington (London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1858-1860); PML 7901-7916; volume IX, page 69.

Acknowledging receipt of Doyle's letter; saying that the Duchess is as well as could be expected, as is "my new English girl"; adding "You are right in wishing me to have a boy, to be sure with four girls I have quite enough"; thanking Doyle for souvenirs; saying that his son is well at Stonyhurst; signing off "Que tal [ingleseo] amigo?".
