Notes
Docketed. The address "Rua do Souto" has been written midway through the docket in a different hand. "Rua do Souto" is the name of a central street in the city of Braga (Portugal), located north of the city of Porto. During the period in which he wrote this letter, Campbell was serving under Lord Wellesley in the Peninsular War, and he was present at the Second Battle of Porto which occurred on May 12, 1809. Based on this information and the address panel, it appears that this letter was written either in Porto or in Braga, to which the British army marched after the battle.
Campbell signs himself "A.A.G.", standing for assistant adjutant-general.
Address panel: "James Ogilvie Esqr / At. [Company] General / Rua de Souto / opposite nr. 20."
Removed from an extra-illustrated copy of Alexis Brialmont, History of the life of Arthur, duke of Wellington (London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1858-1860); PML 7901-7916; volume I.
