Summary
Explaining Beranger's assertion that André Chénier's publisher, Henri de Latouche, made major changes to Chénier's poems, and his further attribution of some of the poems to Latouche himself; stating that Latouche had discovered André Chénier and revealed his work to the public and that he was guilty of more than one case of literary fraud; further explaining that one cause of the problem was Beranger and Latouche's lack of familiarity with ancient Greek poetry, which Chenier greatly admired, and pointing out that Chenier's mother was of Greek origin, and that Chenier himself was born in Constantinople; complaining that Latouche radically changed the biographical preface to Chenier's poems, inventing another Chenier altogether.
