Summary
Writing to the "Young Liberal" and explaining that, although he is known as a socialist, he has "never ceased to be a liberal - which isn't exactly the same thing as a member of the liberal party"; going on to state that "Liberalism stands to socialism as the soul to the body. Socialism without liberalism is organization without liberty, a tyranny of specialized administrative persons, shabby intrigues & greedy vanity disguised as 'expert' management, the death of invention, criticism & progress; liberalism without socialism is genereosity in a vacuum & freedom in a waterless desert", and adding in conclusion, "I tried to liberalise the narrow mind of the Fabian society - Ah well: that is a matter of the past."
