Notes
Written from "Walpole / Chislehurst."
Ruskin wrote this letter while visiting his publisher, George Allen, during a trip to London in May and June 1885. He is replying to an invitation from Leopold Hoffer to chair the banquet of the inaugural meeting of the British Chess Association, of which Ruskin was a Vice-President. The “Council” referred to in the letter is the British Chess Association governing council. The British Chess Association seems to have taken Ruskin up on the offer in this letter, as some of its subsequent tournaments awarded copies of Ruskin's works as prizes.
Provenance
Gordon N. Ray.
Summary
Says that his reply to Hoffer's invitation was delayed, as he was in London rather than at home in Brantwood, Coniston. His habits of secluded life, now of fifty years standing, have made it impossible for him to fulfil duties like that which [the British Chess Association governing council] wishes to entrust him with. Offers to send any of his books for use as a prize, and has ordered his publisher to forward a list of his works in print.
