Writing to say that he will be unable to keep their engagement and sending along his "African travel" book; noting that he read one of her articles, and commenting in response, "I always fear that as Rome has tied her own log about her own neck and resolves on sinking with, the Council of Trent, - so France has tied her log about her own neck, - enforced division of property - & determined to sink into the bottomless pit of depravity and therefore destruction"; concluding "The French Esther is good - descriptive and spiritual."; noting in a postscript that his wife heard from Mr. Langford in London, and that he talks of coming to Paris in March.
