Year of writing suggested by internal evidence; the Penny magazine published a series of articles recounting the achievements of Newcastle developer Richard Grainger appeared in Charles Knight's Penny magazine for the year 1840. John Clayton (1792-1890) was town clerk of Newcastle upon Tyne, England; he worked with the builder Richard Grainger and architect John Dobson to redevelop the center of the city.

Summary
Stating that "due honours" have been done to Mr. John Clayton in papers on the Newcastle Improvements; expressing her opinion that all the public need know of his conversation with Mr. [Richard] Grainger concerning Leazes Terrace (a block of houses built by Grainger in Newcastle in 1829-1834) "is that he had from you the friendly warning I have recorded, & that it wd. be needless to make any supplement to the statement as it stands."; adding that "It would gratify you & your fellow citizens to know how interesting Mr. Grainger's story appears to those who have the management of the Penn Magne. Mr. [Charles] Knight himself declared it the most interesting story he ever heard of."
