Notes
Laid into the Christmas card is a newspaper clipping of Eliot's Letter to the Editor of the Times titled "Stilton Cheese". This letter was published in the Times on November 29, 1935 as indicated in the published letter cited below.
Summary
Being the annual Christmas card from Faber & Faber, with an explanation on the verso "This is the third of the Christmas Cards which Mr. Barnett Freedman has drawn and lithographed for directors and members of Messrs. Faber & Faber to send to their friends. The first two cards were in celebration of Christmas 1945 and Christmas 1946 / 24 Russell Square / London, W.C.1." Eliot has signed the card on the front in an illustration of an open book. There are two illustrations in the center of the card, on the left page is a small building, possibly a stable, in the country and the facing illustration that of a city street at night.
