Notes
The letter is simply addressed "My dear P." It is possible it was addressed to John William Parker (1820-1860) who with his father, John William Parker (1792-1870) owned Fraser's Magazine.
The year of writing is not provided and it is unclear to which Miss Grenfell he may have been referring. Froude married Charlotte Grenfell in 1849. Charles Kingsley married Charlotte's sister, Frances Eliza ("Fanny") Grenfell in 1844.
Written on mourning stationery from "Lowndes Square, S.W." on stationery engraved with the address.
Removed from an extra-illustrated copy of Froude. Life of Carlyle.
