Description
1 item (72 leaves) : on paper ; 16 cm (8vo)
Notes
Possibly by Christopher Tye (1497?-1572), a theological versifier and musician, organist at the Royal Chapel under Elizabeth I, perhaps owned by his daughter, Mary Tye (m. Robert Rowley at Trinity Church in 1560); another Mary Tye (wife of Edward) is recorded in Private Libraries in Renaissance England Online, PLRE Ad43. Authorship also possibly by Mary Herbert, countess of Pembroke (1561-1621), sister of Sir Philip Sidney; their joint version of the Psalms circulated in manuscript. Sir John Harington (1560-1612) was also a versifier of the Bible.
Collation: 1-2⁶ 3-4⁸ 5⁶ 6-9⁸ 10⁶: 72 leaves.
Watermark: armorial of Baden-Hochberg with initials LB beneath, attributed to the mill at Lörrach, just north of Basel; Briquet 1075, dated from the Upper Rhine to Low Countries, 1580-1601.

Provenance
One of the "English royal bindings" sold to Pierpont Morgan by the Pearson firm of London in 1905. The Pearson catalogue claimed that the binding was made for Mary I of England, with the "M T" on the covers standing for Mary Tudor, which is incorrect as the stamp is more often used on bindings around 1600 (1590s-1610) and paper also dates to this period.
