Thanking him for his help in getting an appointment "...for my young relative", the news of which he heard from George Forbes; adding "I had no claim on Mr. Forbes & therefore could not have asked him to interest himself for me or mine as he has done so kindly and so successfully. Accept therefore the sincere offerings of your old Friend for all this disinterested kindness. I can now only express a hope that this young Scion of the Elder Tree may prove, by his good conduct, deserving the interest you have so kindly evinced in his behalf."
