Summary
Acknowledging that he has been informed by Adam Dobson of his need for "direction what to do with the Body of Troops under your Command now at Cristina Bridge. I am also informed by him that Wilmington is in Possession of the Enemy and that he escaped from the Hessians there last night, who had him under Guard. I think it would be well to have that Fact ascertained in the most speedy and best manner you can and if possible know the Number of their Troops & if you find they are there I would recommend that you join me Tomorrow at the cross Roads near new London in order after our junction that we might fall on their Rear or join General Washington as Circumstances might require - any Intelligence you can communicate respecting the Enemy's Numbers Motions or designs in that or any other Quarter will be acceptable - also if you have heard of Col. Gist with the eastern Shore Militia please inform where he is posted as their being in possession of Wilmington may change his route and Views so as to render his junction with me also necessary."
