Expressing his concern that his letters to Greene may be getting intercepted en route; detailing his plan to attack Cornwallis in Virginia; mentioning that the Comte de Grasse has arrived in the Chesapeake with "28 Ships of the Line and 4 frigates" and has landed 3000 troops; reporting that Cornwallis is fortifying two posts, one at York, the other at Gloucester; describing what he has heard of the movements of British ships and troops in New York; noting that this letter will be delivered by Colonel Steward; asking for details of "a very severe Action which took place on the 8th between [Greene's troops] and the British under Comd. of Colo Stewart" [the Battle of Eutaw Springs].
