Summary
Collection contains sixty-three letters: fifty-five to Mary Berry, two to Agnes Berry, five to Mary and Agnes jointly, and one to their father Robert Berry. Walpole gives detailed descriptions of local news, following the Elizabeth Gunning scandal closely, detailing royal gossip, and mentioning scores of mutual acquaintances (including most frequently Mrs. Damer). Walpole also reports on the French Revolution and describes in detail reports (some false) of Continental unrest, usually in an attempt to make the Berrys reconsider a trip to Florence (they traveled to Italy in 1790-1791). Letters have been described individually in separate catalog records; see related records for more information.
