Summary
Using the opportunity of Captain Pierce's departure to "give you some news of this corps of troops which I command in this county of Virginia;" saying not "nothing interesting has happened since the taking of Cornwallis;" adding that he has news that he cannot authenticate that Admiral Digby is with 9 ships and 16 ships are following Count de Grasse, "that the troops that were imbarked upon the fleet are Landed at Staten island, that [General Henry] Clinton has not been heard of these several days past, that Knyphausen has taken the command and that the English believe that he, Clinton, has drowned himself. Prince William is at New York; asking for his news and hoping for his continued success.
