Although no superscription appears on the document, the mention of "Madame Bouthillier", née Marie de Bragelongne, strongly suggests that the recipient is Claude Bouthillier. This text takes place in the context of Richelieu's promotion to the cardinalate on the previous September 5.

Summary:

Saying that he hasn't been doing very much because his illness/pain is worse than usual. Saying that the affair of Monsieur de Roche is concluded, that he will bring Bouthillier his order/writ, that he had the certificates of the abbeys changed as they should be, and that he asks that the queen have someone fetch Chanteloube and tell him that some people said the king had given him Pont-de-Voie [Pontlevoy] and that consequently he should have it. Saying that the queen was happy to clarify with him the manner with which the affair took place and that the king, desiring Buzay and Quimperlé, he [Richelieu] had turned over Buzay of his own free will with no conditions to the queen, who had given it to him [Richelieu] to deal with according to the king's pleasure, but she hadn't wished to cede Quimperlé without a pension for him, redeemable by an abbey. Stating that Ruccellaï, upon his death, had reminded the king of his word and asked him for the abbey to terminate Chanteloube's pension, which had already been discontinued through the disposal of another abbey. Saying that he is writing to the queen to make a present to the Marquis de La Valette on the occasion of his wedding, and suggesting Madame Bouthillier's beautiful diamond clip.
