Summary
Discussing the "Provisions of Haversacks for the Local Militia," the price of wool, and suggesting that should the allowance for Clothing be inadequate, "Gov't w'd of course be under the necessity of making good the Deficiency;" relating news of his brother's (Sir John Moore) efforts at the Battle of Benavente; saying "I have a Letter my Brother dates Benavente the 20th Dec'r - When upon the Point of attacking [Marshal Nicolas Jean de Dieu]Soult he rec'd Intelligence that he was very much re-inforced & also that a large Force was advancing against him (as he had expected) from Madrid - he therefore was obliged to desist from his Intention, & to retreat as fast as possible towards Astorga to prevent his being cut off from Gallicia - The French I understand from acc'ts bro't by Mr. Wyndham as late as the 31st are in great Force & press him very hard - his numbers are only 27,000 - of w'h only 2,000 Cavalry - The French [illegible] it is [illegible] 10,000 Cavalry - the Spaniards afford no aid. This is dismal news but what I believe you as well as I have long expected - I understand that Marquis Wellesley is open mouthed & violent against Ministers respecting the Court of Inquiry. Parliament will meet under very bad auspices."
