Summary
Informing him he has received intelligence which is "not public" but acknowledging that he most likely gets his intelligence from the Governor of South Carolina [John Rutledge]; expressing his hopes for the defeat of Cornwallis and for the admission by Cornwallis of the superiority of the Americans; saying "I fancy he will lower his tone very much; & perhaps will tell his Masters he is at last convinced these fellows can fight;" saying "In short, that a variety of circumstances concur to induce in me a belief that the haughty & imperious Britons will soon be brought to think like reasonable beings;" saying that they are waiting for word on what will be done with respect to the execution of Colonel Hayne; enclosing a speech made by Charles Fox which he believes will "afford you much entertainment;" adding that the "extract from Heath gives a striking picture of N:York, & shows that the invincible British navy has got a most damnable drubbing."
