Summary
Appealing for a promotion for Lieutenant Brown of the 53rd; describing Brown's family circumstances and saying that they are unable to purchase him a commission: "his father is a Gentleman with an Income of I daresay not more than three hundred Pounds a year, and has a Wife who soon after they were married lost totally the Power of one Side by a Stroke of the Palsy when in Childbed I believe of this very Lieutenant Brown, but wonderfull as it may appear, she has in that Situation born to him since not less than 12 Children. He is an honest Country Gentleman a Steady Friend of Mine in the Country, and I have done all I can for his family;" explaining that if Brown cannot be promoted without purchase, he is willing to "open my own purse rather than that he should stand longer still;" referring to Lord Adam Gordon and "my Nephew the colonel" (possibly Francis Dundas) and saying he does not expect his appeal on behalf of Brown to stand in the way of other necessary appointments.
