Collated with the first edition and complete, but several pages are bound out of order.
Sir Walter Scott was contracted to write Tales of My Landlord (in 4 vols.) in April 1816; The Black Dwarf (vol. 1) was completed that summer and was in print by the end of August. The remaining three volumes (Old Morality) were completed later that year and all four volumes were issued together as Tales of My Landlord on December 2, 1816.
With a signed attestation by Robert Cadell on a preliminary leaf: "This is the Original Manuscript of Old Mortality, purchased by me at Auction on 19th August 1831. Rob Cadell 1834."

Given by Sir Walter Scott to Archibald Constable in 1823; his sale (London, Evans, 1831) to Robertson for Robert Cadell; purchased by Pierpont Morgan from Cyrus Daniell in 1897.

Written on the rectos and with corrections and additions on some versos of 264 leaves. Each of the three volumes is foliated separately: vol. 1 contains 53 p.; vol. 2 contains 105 p.; vol. 3 contains 106 p.
