Sir Walter Scott began work on Anne of Geierstein in March 1828 and completed the work on 29 April 1829; it was published in Edinburgh on 20 May and in London on 25 May of that year.
The manuscript has been collated with the first edition of the novel. Books I and III are complete, but have various differences from the printed text; Book II is complete except for 6 pages of manuscript containing Chapter IV, p. 120 to Chapter V, p. 144, and also has various differences from the printed text.
