Contains the letters involved in the controversy between Thackeray and Edmund Yates over the latter's article on Thackeray in Town Talk, Vol. 1, no. 6, June 12, 1858: Thackeray's letter dated 19 June 1858 referring the matter to the Garrick Club, the text of the article, and letters between Yates and the club, ending with his refusal (dated 1 July 1858) to accept its request for an apology to Thackeray. Contains on p. 64 in the article "Literary Talk" an (unsigned) article by Edmund Yates on "Mr. W. M. Thackeray".
Library copy contains a letter dated July 7, 1858, from Charles Dickens addressed to Lord John Russell (MA 7609), concluding with a description of the "convulsions" caused in the Garrick Club because of Thackeray's complaint of the article on him by Edmund Yates.
