Begging to be recalled from banishment; saying, in the letter from Rouen, dated August 25, 1674, "It is now full seven years since I have been deprived of your Maj'ties favour with some Circumstances of Mortification, which have never been exercised towards any other man, and therefore, I may hope from your good Nature and Justice, that a Severity which you have never practiced upon any other Man for half the time, may be diminished in some degree towards me....The Wound was inflicted only by your own hand, and no other can cure it; Nor do I wish the Cure to be sooner administered, than your Majesty thinks fitt to vouchsafe it; If the Sufferings I have already undergone (greater it may be than your Majesty believes) be not a sufficient Ransom for all my Presumptions and [illegible] , which are all the Crimes I am conscious of, and which no doubt may be great Crimes towards Princes, though they are the natural Product of long Service and much Favour and Bounty; I shall with all possible Resignation wait your own time, and only beseech your Majesty rather to believe your own Observation of my Integrity for four and twenty years together in your own presence than the Calumny of a few Men, who have made impossible Storys of my Corruptions, which are sufficiently confuted by my undeniable poverty, which is so great and pressing that I am no longer able to subsist, and to pay my Debts without the Sale of most of the Records of your Royall Bounty..."
