Summary
Collection consists primarily of letters and orders issued from the Navy Office in London to the Clerk of the Cheque at His Majesty's dockyard at Chatham. This post was held by Edward Gregory Sr. (d. 1682) from 1661-1665 and by his son, who was also named Edward Gregory (d. 1713), from 1665-1689. The documents are all related to Navy business at Chatham. Sixty-five are signed by Samuel Pepys, who was then Chief Secretary to the Admiralty. Documents are also signed variously by Sir William Penn (English admiral and general at sea, a commissioner of the Navy, and father of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania ), Sir William Batten, Sir William Coventry (Commissioner of the Navy, 1662), Sir John Mennes, Sir George Carteret (Treasurer of the Navy, 1660-1667), Sir John Berkeley, Sir Peter Pett, Sir William Brouncker (Commissioner for execution of the office of Lord High Admiral), Sir Thomas Middleton, Arthur, Earl of Anglesey (Treasurer of the navy, 1667), and Thomas Hervey. One is signed by Charles II, King of England. Documents have been cataloged individually in 106 records; see related records for more information.
