DeHart who came from Head Quarters saying "that he was informed by the Commissary of Prisoners that there were at lest Seven thousand prisoners, besides Marines & Sailors, who Surrendered to Gen'l Washington. this most decisive and important Blow, will I trust, convince our Enemies of a great truth, which they are so unwilling to believe, that is, that America is not to be conquered;" relating news of mutual friends who had been killed; informing him that the "new political year" begins "next Monday" and "your Delegates here have received no Commissions Since their last appointment. we have tis true a letter from the Secretary which I believe will be received as evidence of our appointment. But I think it proper that I should receive a Commission if I stay here till March next, which I am determined to do, unless I should be relieved before that time."
