Summary
Reporting that he has "passed in safety through North Carolina....and am now safe in the Land of honesty and public virtue. I congratulate myself on the good fortune, especially as the Tories have lately pervaded the whole State of North Carolina, and disturbed the repose of the honest Whigs in every quarter;" reporting that General Washington "has arrived in Virginia and that he has with him about 14000 Men below the city of Wlmsburg. The People in general are in high Spirits, and all our Friends are very sanguine in their expectations of capturing his Lordship;" reporting that there had been "an Action" between the French and British fleets but that the accounts are too confusing to give a proper account, however he is "certain that the French were victorious;" discussing troop positions and procurement of stores of salt, smoked tongue, ham and vinegar; assuring him "that the Battle of Eutaw has given great satisfaction to the People. Our little Army is much extolled and your own reputation not a little augmented;" adding, in a postscript, news of the death of General Campbell and a leg wound received by General Wayne. .
