Notes
Paulet gives the place of writing as "Head Quarters, Scutari." He is referring to the British military headquarters in Üsküdar, a district of Istanbul.
Written in the third person.
Black-bordered envelope with seal, stamp, and postmarks: "Miss Burdett Coutts / Stratton Street / Piccadilly."
The letter is part of a collection, MA 1352, which consists of letters from Charles Dickens to the Baroness, to her companion Hannah (Meredith) Brown, or the latter's husband, William Brown; with 70 letters written by others to Miss Coutts or to Dickens in his capacity as her unofficial almoner; and a few others. The letters formed part of the Burdett-Coutts sale (Sotheby, 17 May 1922); they were purchased for Oliver W. Barrett in whose collection they remained until it was sold by his son (Parke-Bernet, 31 October 1951).
Summary
Thanking her in the name of the sick and wounded soldiers for the drying closet which she had had installed in the hospital there; telling her that George Phillips (who had been sent out for this purpose) had assembled the machine, given it a week's trial, and was then provided with a passage on a steamer heading back to England; saying that the drying closet "answers admirably."
