Description
1 item (1 page) ; 19.9 x 16.8 cm
Notes
Signed with initials.
Churchill gives only "Monday Night" as the date of writing. He and John Wilkes began to work together on the journal "The North Briton" in 1762, so it seems probable that this letter was written between 1762 and Churchill's death two years later.
There are two notes in an unknown hand on the recto and verso identifying Churchill as the writer of the letter. The recto also contains a brief biographical sketch of Churchill.
Additional provenance information available in the Collection File.
Provenance
From the collection of Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Purchased from the bookseller Quaritch at Christie's, London, October 22, 1980.
Summary
Concerning page proofs; requesting "proof of this, and of others, as copy comes to hand, with all speed -- let [William] Griffin print it"; instructing Cook to "direct it for me (made into a parcel) at Mr Wilkes's, and send it by the Aylesbury stage"; asking for two copies, "one which I may immediately return you corrected, the other for myself"; adding in a postscript "Let not one Soul know it is in hand."
