Summary
Clarifying what type of material he is seeking for the Edinburgh Journal: "We should be glad to have submitted to us, original tales, sketches of society and manners, essays -- any thing of a sufficiently striking and attractive nature, and of a moderate length"; writing that they will pay "as well as the magazines"; cautioning her that the readers of the Journal "expect its light literature to be equal to that of the best magazines, and further demand that it should as far as possible be improving and instructive as well as entertaining"; mentioning the Journal's reputation for "simplicity and earnestness" and asking her to keep these considerations in mind as she contemplates submitting her work.
