Summary
Commenting on the possibility of "recovering America;" discussing, in detail, his proposal for the printing and distribution of Bibles and Psalms and the financial particulars he is proposing; reporting on the visits from the Bank of Scotland and the upcoming visit by the Bank of Dundee; congratulating him "...on the good news from Carolina, if the situation we are at present in, so pushed with vigor, I think there is almost now a certainty of recovering America, in consequence of which I flatter myself we will be able to make the French & Spaniards repent their perfidiousness;" relating a proposal he is considering to build a gunpowder mill at Milbank and on which he would like his opinion saying "The thing for it is, that there is no manufacture of that kind in Scotland;" adding "Bookselling is at so low a pass, that I have sometimes have had thoughts of giving it up, it is a laborious business at present without any profit and it is only the hope of it amending, that makes me continue."
