Cheyne gives the date of writing as "10 1740", possibly referring to October 1740.
Address panel: "To / Doctor Cuningham / Physician at Laugharne / Wales." Alexander Dick was born Alexander Cunningham but changed his surname to "Dick" on the death of his brother William in 1746, when he succeeded to the Dick baronetcy. He, like Cheyne, was a physician and became President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
