Summary
Saying that the University has conferred the Degree of Doctor in Physick on Francis Pearce, in consequence of Lettsom's recommendation; saying that ordinarily "...they insist on a certificate signed by two Physicians: but the name of Dr. Lettsom stands so high in their estimation, as well as in that of the Publick, that they thought themselves - warranted in this instance to deviate a little from the general rule;" asking to be remembered to Mr. Scot [sic] of Amwell saying "He is at all times the object of my best wishes and gratitude: but a long course of severe family affliction which still continues has in a great measure disqualified me for epistolary correspondence. However, I still hope for better days, or that Providence will dispose my heart to a becoming resignation. I am greatly obliged to you, Sir, for your intended present, which I am impatient to see, and which I am sure will be most agreeable."
