A note in an earlier record for this fragment suggests it may possibly be in the hand of John Adolphus. A penciled notation at the bottom of the recto of this fragment says "from Adolphus Sale."
Purchased as part of a collection of fifty letters of artists and architects.
The Joshua Reynolds sale was held at Christie's in 1794.

Summary
Concerning Bannister's sale of a picture to Lord Egremont, the whereabouts of Mrs. Colman and Miss F. Kelly, his budget, and a robbery in Ireland; concerning the sale saying "The Picture he sold to L'd Egremont he bought at Sir J. Reynolds sale at Christies in Pall Mall with some others, his Lordship purchased it, Sir W. Beechey calling on him said 'oh to have this Picture it was Bannisters. you gave £200 for it, & its well worth it, no indeed, said his Lordship I only gave 150, he sent the additional 50 with that handsome letter which I suppose you have;" saying, of the robbery, "The robbery in Ireland was not by his servant, the money was placed in a small box by his bedside & the next day when he looked for it, it was gone, he did not take any means of finding out the thief, his servant had lived several years with him & was strictly honest."
