Summary
Accepting an engagement and thanking Ward for the "terms at once gentlemanly and delicate" in which it was offered; adding "I throw myself upon the candor and honorable feeling of the Committee, believing that my acceptance of the present modified proposal, will not form a ground or precedent for future arrangements, as they do me the justice to acknowledge that the offer made is more in conformity with the necessities of the concern, than as an appreciation of talent"; writing that he feels particularly thankful for the "kind conclusion" of Ward's letter; entreating that "the amount of salary may be made known to as few persons as possible."
