The first draft of this poem was written in New York City, at 51 West 10th street (old number) the 5th residence plot beyond Grace Church in the summer of 1848. It was rewritten at least three times before it reached the form for first publication. T.O. Mabbott says that the present item is almost certainly the manuscript used for that version although slight changes appear in the printing.
Written on 8 pieces of paper pasted end to end and mounted on silk.

Sold in the summer of 1849 by the author to John Sartain for publication in his Sartain's Union Magazine; acquired by Pierpont Morgan before 1913.
